03. 🏁 Finishing & Habits

Built on the day I finished the habit study, a week into the walk-first experiment. It holds what I believe about getting a small thing done on an ordinary day, which is the only kind of day I have much of.

🧭 The Atlas

Starting. A habit does not begin with wanting it. 💎 A habit needs a fixed cue more than it needs motivation is the reason 🔹 Walk before screens is tied to the front door and not to my mood, and 💎 The first hour of the day decides who owns the rest is the same claim with a clock on it.

Keeping going. The two notes I reread most in bad weeks: 💎 One missed day does not break a habit, which lets me come back on a Wednesday without a ceremony, and 💎 A habit takes months and not three weeks, which stops me judging anything in its first month. 💎 Rest is part of the programme and not a reward for it arrived late, from a deload week, and I still hold it less firmly than the rest.

Protecting the hours. 💎 Evenings are the only hours nobody is paying for and 💎 Makers need half days and managers need hours are about where the work can physically happen. 💎 Working memory holds a handful of things so the list must hold the rest is why tomorrow's first task goes on a card.

Finishing. 💎 A finished small thing teaches more than an unfinished large one is the centre of the map. 💎 A scorecard helps until it becomes the goal is the warning attached to it: a full row of ticks is not the thing I wanted.

❓ Open question

What is the difference between a minimum version and an excuse? One sentence counts as writing on a bad day, and I believe that. I also know that five one-sentence days in a row are telling me something the tracker is built not to show.
