A note is finished when it can be read without its source
💎CORE ARGUMENT
A note is done when someone who has never seen the source can read it and lose nothing. Until then it is a bookmark with opinions.
Most of what I wrote in systems one to three fails this. Good point about delays, see ch. 2. Which point? Good for what? The note assumed a reader who still had the book open and the afternoon fresh. That reader existed for about a week.
The test is easy to state and unpleasant to apply:
- Close the source.
- Read the note as a stranger would.
- Ask whether it makes a claim, gives a reason, and stands up.
If I have to reopen the book to understand my own sentence, the note recorded that I read something. What I understood is not in it.
My father's repair notebooks pass. I read them again in May while clearing the spare room. Each entry has the date, the fault, the part, and what he would do differently next time. He was writing about a crane he could see from where he stood, and still he wrote every entry as if the reader had never met it. Twenty years on, the reader had not. I know nothing about slew bearings and I could follow every page.
That is the standard, and it has little to do with length. His entries are four lines. They are finished because nothing in them points outside the page for its meaning.
A consequence I did not expect: a finished note is harder to write and much easier to use. The cost moves to the front, where I still have the context to pay it.
Where I might be wrong. The test rewards notes that sound complete, and I am good at sounding complete. A paragraph can read cleanly without its source and still be wrong about what the source said. Standing alone and being accurate are separate things.
Dad's notebooks may also be a kinder example than they look. A fault and a part are concrete. Most of what I take notes on is argument, and an argument cut loose from its source loses its evidence along with its context.
🧱BUILT FROM
🌍WHY IT MATTERS
I write a permanent note only when I can state the claim with the book shut. If I cannot, it stays a literature note, which is an honest thing to be. On Sundays I read one old note cold and either finish it or demote it.
☑️NEXT STEPS
- Re-read one permanent note cold each Sunday
- Demote the notes from system three that are only pointers
- Photograph the 1998 notebook before it goes back to Mum
📖 Ahrens on notes that outlive projects for the idea that a note should outlive the project it came from. 📖 Matuschak on evergreen notes for the properties that make one last: one idea, a claim for a title, written to be read cold.
💎 Notes should be written for the person who has forgotten everything names the stranger, who is me. 💎 A system I keep rebuilding is a system I am not using is what I did for six years in place of applying this test.
A note that leans on its source borrows its meaning, and the loan is called in when the source is forgotten. Writing it to stand alone forces me to state the claim and the reason, which is the same act as understanding it. The standing alone is the proof that I did.
Not every note deserves it. A phone number, a quotation, the page where the good diagram is: these are pointers and should stay pointers. Finishing everything would be its own way of never finishing anything.
The working distinction in this vault is 🧩 Literature and permanent notes. The original, and still the best example I own, is 🕰️ My father's repair notebooks.
