Delays make a sensible reaction look like the wrong one
💎CORE ARGUMENT
When the effect of an action arrives late, the natural reading of the gap is that the action did not work. So I act again, harder. Then both doses land together, and a reasonable correction becomes an overshoot. Nobody in this story was foolish. Each move was sensible given what could be seen at the time. The delay is what made the sum of them wrong.
The shower is the household version: turn the tap, feel nothing, turn it further, get scalded. The work versions are slower and therefore harder to recognise. A new hire becomes useful in months, so the team that hired in a crisis is overstaffed after it. A launch changes support volume a fortnight later, when the people who would have connected the two have moved on. A training course changes behaviour a quarter after the survey that judged it.
My clearest lesson was my left ring finger. After the pulley strain in March, the tissue answered each week's loading about six weeks later. Every time it felt fine I wanted to add weight, and feeling fine was a report on what I had done a month and a half before. The protocol worked because it ignored how the finger felt today and moved on a schedule.
Two rules came out of it. Before judging a correction, ask how long this system takes to answer, and wait at least that long. The second is harder: when a colleague's reaction looks wrong, check whether they are replying to something that reached them late. What reads as disagreement is often an old message.

🌍WHY IT MATTERS
I write the expected delay next to the change when I make it, so that silence in week two is not read as failure. In reviews I ask what the person knew on the day, not what we know now.
☑️NEXT STEPS
- Note the expected delay beside every change in the release notes
- Load the finger by Ilse's schedule, not by how it feels
- Ask of the next odd reaction: what reached them late?
Delays in feedback loops, and the finding that ordering rules plus delays are enough to make a calm supply chain swing.
The same lag, compounded along a chain, in 💎 Demand swings grow as they travel away from the customer. The same humility in 💎 I can listen to a system but I cannot control it.
A delayed response hides the link between cause and effect. The actor sees no result, repeats or strengthens the action, and the delayed results then arrive stacked. Oscillation follows from the delay alone, with no error of judgment anywhere.
Give it time has protected a great many bad ideas. Waiting needs a date after which the absence of an effect counts as evidence, or patience becomes a way of never being wrong.
An issue about reading lateness as hostility, a belief about my own body, and a recovery plan that moves by the calendar and not by feel.
