Grace Hopper's team completed an early compiler in 1952
💡DETAILS
In 1952 🏛️ Grace Hopper and her team at Remington Rand finished the A-0 system for the UNIVAC I. It took a list of calls to subroutines kept on tape and assembled them into a machine-code program.
By today's standards A-0 behaves more like a linker or loader than a compiler, but she called it a compiler and the word stayed.
Why I kept it: read on a sick Sunday straight after 🏛️ Ada Lovelace. One wrote that the machine does what we know how to order it to do. The other made the ordering easier, 109 years later.
