Home network and router settings

๐Ÿ“Œ TL;DR / Quick Summary <div style="background: rgba(0,0,0,0.3); border: 1px dashed rgba(255,255,255,0.2); padding: 15px; border-radius: 8px; color: rgba(255,255,255,0.7); margin-bottom: 30px;"> Set up on 10 July 2021, the week after we moved into the ๐Ÿก Flat on Lindgate Street, and filed here in January with the other old papers. Where the box sits, which channels it uses, and what to restart in which order when it sulks. No passwords in this note. They are on the card inside the meter cupboard. The contract is ๐Ÿงพ Home internet. </div>

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Instructions / Core Material How it is set

  • Router on the hall shelf at head height, not in the cupboard where the line comes in. A three-metre cable was cheaper than a bad signal
  • Two networks: the fast one for the office and the living room, the slow one that reaches the balcony
  • Slow band fixed on channel 1. The neighbours on both sides sit on 6
  • Fast band on channel 36, fixed, not automatic
  • Guest network on, for Theo and for anyone who asks

When it stops, in this order

  • Look at the lights before touching anything. Two green is fine; one orange is the line, not us
  • Check the supplier's status page on the phone, on mobile data
  • Unplug the modem, the small white box. Count to thirty
  • Plug the modem in and wait until both lights are steady. Two minutes
  • Only then restart the router
  • Laptop last: network off and on
  • Still nothing after ten minutes: it is the line. Phone them, and work from the library

โš ๏ธ Key Warnings / Constraints

  • Restarting the router before the modem achieves nothing and feels like progress.
  • Since the spare room became the office in June the desk gets the fast band through one wall. If calls stutter, close the office door less, not more.
  • Jonas's drawings are large files. On a Sunday evening the upload is his and the stutter is not a fault.
