๐ŸŽฏCORE THESIS

Everyone is issued the same twenty-four hours each morning and nobody can save or borrow any. The working day is not the day; treat the hours from leaving the office to arriving at it again as a day inside the day, and give some of them, regularly and without heroics, to something that uses the mind. Start small, expect to fail a little, and do not tell everyone about it.

โšกQUICK JOTS

  • Two evenings, 3 and 5 January, on the sofa with the tree still up. The shortest book of the year and a favourite.
  • Bossy, dated, written for clerks who take the train to an office and feel their real life has not started. So: for me.
  • He is right about evenings and wrong about how much energy a person has left at eight.
  • He warns his own reader not to become a prig about it, which I did not expect from a self-improvement book of 1908.
  • It began life as a newspaper series: ๐Ÿ’ก Bennett's little book began as newspaper articles. That explains the chapter lengths and the hectoring.
  • Counts towards ๐ŸŽฏ Finish 16 books and keep notes on the ones that matter, small as it is, and it has turned up in ๐Ÿ“‚ Slack in the System - 2025 issues more than once since.
  • Begin with less than seems worth beginning with is the whole of ๐Ÿงฉ Minimum viable habit, long before anyone called it that.

๐Ÿ’กTAKEAWAYS

  • Three evenings a week, ninety minutes, for something of mine. The course took Tuesday; the newsletter has the other two.
  • The minimum version of ๐Ÿ”น Write 300 words is his idea in miniature: begin with less than seems worth beginning with.
  • Do not plan the reformed life on 1 January. Plan Tuesday.
