FACT
Marcus Aurelius wrote the Meditations in Greek, for himself
💡DETAILS
🏛️ Marcus Aurelius was a Roman emperor and wrote his notebooks in Greek, the Koine Greek that was the language of philosophy in his day. They were notes to himself, with no sign that he meant them to be read.
The title is not his. The manuscripts call the work Ta eis heauton, roughly things to himself; Meditations is a later English name. Two of the twelve books carry headings that place them on campaign, on the Danube frontier.
Why I kept it: it changes how I read 📕 Meditations. He is not lecturing me. I am reading over his shoulder.
