Sarn Ridge tick list
📌 TL;DR / Quick Summary <div style="background: rgba(0,0,0,0.3); border: 1px dashed rgba(255,255,255,0.2); padding: 15px; border-radius: 8px; color: rgba(255,255,255,0.7); margin-bottom: 30px;"> Everything I pulled onto at 🏞️ Sarn Ridge on 20 and 21 September 2025: eleven problems tried, six done. Written up on the bonnet of Caleb's car with Caleb Ostrow, Hana Kobayashi and Dario Conti before we drove home, and typed that night with hands like sandpaper. None of us had the guidebook open, so the names are the ones the group gave them and the grades are Pavel Dvořák's guesses, said over his shoulder. The weekend itself is in ✈️ Sarn Ridge climbing weekend; the wish it closed is ⭐ Climb at Sarn Ridge. </div>
🛠️ Instructions / Core Material Saturday, Lower Tier
- Pappardelle (about 3). The warm-up traverse, wide and flat, named by Dario before anyone had touched it. Done, feet never more than a metre up.
- The Embarrassment (3+). A slab with a crack you could park a bicycle in. Done, and topped out. My first route on real rock, at a grade I would not log indoors, and the best climb of the year. Hands on grass, then standing up into the wind.
- Thermos Lid (4). Named for the object Caleb used to explain friction at the bottom of it. Done, second go, once I believed him.
- Wet Dog (4+). In the shade and still damp. Three goes. Not done. Pavel said to leave wet sandstone alone and he was not asking.
- Not Yellow (5). One small sharp edge at head height. I put my left hand on it, took it off again and walked away. Not done, on purpose.
Sunday, Lower Tier and the first bay of the main edge
- Confidence Interval (4). Hana chalked a bracket either side of the top hold. Done, first go.
- Second Breakfast (4+). A mantel onto a ledge the width of a tray. Done, with a noise.
- Ditalini (4). Three moves, very short, Dario again. Done. That made three for the day and the finger had not said a word.
- The Letterbox (5). A horizontal slot and nothing for the feet. Four goes. Not done. Caleb did it in his trainers.
- Pavel's Staircase (5). He called it a staircase. Two goes, got to the last step. Not done.
- Sandpaper (5+). A rounded arête, everybody's last problem. One go, no skin. Not done. Next time.
Six done: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8. No tape on Sunday.
⚠️ Key Warnings / Constraints
- Grades are guesses, and sandstone guesses run hard. Take one and a half off whatever Bouldering grades, my translation says I can do.
- Never on damp rock. It is soft when wet and the holds break, which spoils it for everyone after us.
- Not Yellow stays not done until somebody who is not me says the finger is a year clear.
